Would you like to learn how to crochet a shawl without using a pattern? Jenny Dowde has done just that.

Jenny is an expert freeform knitter and crocheter who has authored several books on these topics. Her books explain the process in-depth, but if you're just looking for a few pointers to get you started, you'll want to check out the article Jenny has written for our web site. She shares photos of her Magpie shawl, and gives tips and advice to textile designers who might like to try making their own, original, one-of-a-kind freeform crochet projects.

Hm. And here I’ve just always done that! I’ve freeform crocheted shawls, stuffed animals, and all sorts of other things. For me, it was an accomplishment to learn how to read a pattern, LOL. :D

Me too, Beth! My great aunt taught me how to crochet, but she didn’t teach me how to read a pattern. I had to figure that out on my own. By the time I did, I’d already become adept at designing my own projects.

I think perhaps you and I are in the minority, though?
