Crochet is a low-tech, affordable hobby. You don't need many supplies to get started with crochet; at minimum, you'll need
- A crochet hook
- Something to crochet with -- usually, yarn or crochet thread, although there are other innovative materials you could use, including plarn and fabric.
- A pair of scissors
A tapestry needle is also nice to have; you can crochet without one, but if you have one, it's easier to weave in the ends when you've finished your crochet project. A tape measure or ruler is helpful for checking your gauge.
That's it! Those are the basic supplies you need to get started.
If at any point you decide that you'd like to go beyond the basics, there are plenty of additional items to consider. You can find out more information about some of them by taking a look at my page dedicated to crochet supplies.
Crochet Patterns
At some point, you may wish to start accumulating crochet patterns. I recommend that you start by using the free crochet patterns we've posted; you really don't need to invest a lot of money in buying patterns, especially when you are starting out with crochet.
