There are bunches of different ways you could approach the task of crocheting a headband. The approach you choose will depend on how you want your headband to function, and how you want it to look.
Choose a Headband Pattern:
There are crochet patterns available for all different types and styles of headbands -- athletic headbands, dressy headbands, earwarmers, warm winter headbands, and so on. When you choose a headband pattern, you'll want to select one that looks like it will work well for the end use you have in mind.
We've posted bunches of free crochet headband patterns on our website for you to use. The following photos show you a couple of designs available, but there are plenty of others on the list if these aren't quite what you're looking for.
Alternatively, you could design your own headband pattern, or make a one-of-a-kind headband using the freeform crochet technique. Designing your own headband would usually be a little more work than starting with a pattern that's already available, but it can be rewarding, especially if you have a unique sense of style that's hard to express using other people's designs.
Choose Your Materials:
Usually, your pattern will suggest a specific yarn, or at least a recommended fiber and yarn weight. If you can't find / can't afford / don't like the suggested yarn, don't worry; in many cases, you can make substitutions. Look for yarn that's made of the same fiber with which you can achieve the same gauge -- or at least, in similar fiber, one that has similar properties to the recommended yarn.
Crochet Your Headband
Once you have the steps above taken care of, it's time for the fun part -- crocheting your headband! I hope you'll enjoy the process, and that you'll love your finished headband design.
