Sheri asks,

Dear Amy,

Please help! I've already learned the basic crochet stitches and I've made afghans with all of them to the point that I'm getting bored with them. Now I want to learn some fancy crochet stitches. But I don't know what any of the stitch names are so I can't search for them by name. Help, help, help!!!!"

Hi Sheri,

Thanks for getting in touch! You came to the right place. We have posted an online -- free! -- crochet stitch photo gallery that includes photos of many different fancy crochet stitches. It's kind of like a crochet stitch dictionary, only it's posted online and it's completely free to use. For each stitch included in the gallery, you'll find either written instructions, or a link to a free video, or a link to a free step-by-step photo tutorial for learning how to crochet that stitch. The gallery is new and it's a work in progress; it's useful as is, but it is getting better all the time.

We also have another, more complete resource that I think you'll find helpful. It's a directory page filled with links to all kinds of fancy crochet stitches. Not to mention plain crochet stitches, lacy crochet stitches, textured crochet stitches, colorful crochet stitches, and just about every other kind of crochet stitch you could think of. You'll find that page here at this link:

A few highlights from the page:

You mentioned that you are familiar with the basic crochet stitches, but have you tried all the different variations you can make with them? You can vary the look of even the basic single crochet and double crochet stitches by crocheting through different loops. Visit the following pages for more information:

The cluster stitches are good to learn about after you've learned the basic crochet stitches. Many crochet patterns include cluster stitches, and it's helpful to be familiar with them.

Likewise, the shell stitches.

One of my current favorite stitches is the lacy interrupted v-stitch. Why? Well, because it's soooo easy, and so quick! Compared to many other crochet stitches, it works up very, very quickly; if you want a finished project (like a baby blanket) in a hurry, it's a fantastic stitch to know. I designed several patterns using this stitch, including a baby blanket and a lacy scarf.

I hope you'll enjoy browsing through our entire library of crochet stitches. You'll find plenty of other interesting options too! Check back often because we add more new stitches frequently. Happy crocheting!
