This easy crochet beanie pattern is simple enough for you to use it to make your first-ever hat. That's right; you're a newbie to crochet, and you can learn how to crochet a beanie. This design uses only two crochet stitches: the chain stitch (what every crocheter learns first) and the simple single crochet stitch. 

Worked in the round, a few rounds of increases give the hat its shape and give you an excellent opportunity to practice some basic techniques and hone your skills. The instructions come with enough detail to help you through areas where a beginner might get stuck.

The crochet beanie itself is a classic hat design that lends itself to variation in color and size. You will be proud to wear your first crochet hat. Then you will want to make a bunch of them to give to everyone you know.

Sizing / Finished Measurements

Circumference: 20-1/2 inches

Length: 6-1/2 inches

The hat length can be adjusted by crocheting fewer rounds for a shorter hat, or more rounds for a longer hat. Once you become skilled at crochet, you'll be able to easily adapt this pattern to create the same beanie design in other sizes. You can also make smaller and larger sizes by following the same pattern by using smaller or larger crochet hooks.

Gauge

12 sts = 4 inches in single crochet

After working Round 2, the hat should measure 2 inches in diameter; after crocheting Round 4, about 3 3/8 inches in diameter; after crocheting Round 6, about 4 1/4 inches in diameter.

Start by trying a size K/10.5 crochet hook, but adjust hook size if necessary to get gauge.

Notes

The ch st at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch; it is used only to build up the height of the following round.

What You'll Need

Equipment / Tools

  • US H/8 to K/10.5 (5.0 to 6.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn or tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Materials

  • 110 to 130  yard worsted weight yarn

Instructions

  1. Making a Ring

    Ch 5, using a slip stitch, join with a sl st to form a ring.

  2. Foundation Round

    Work into the center of the ring for the first round.

    Rnd 1: ch 1, work 10 sc into the center of the ring, sl st to first ch to join—10 sc sts.

  3. Crown Increases

    Rnd 2 (increase): ch 1, [2 sc in next st] 10 times, work sc in sl st at end of previous rnd, sl st in first st to join—21 sc sts.

    Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in ea st around, sl st in first st to join.

    Rnd 4 (increase): ch 1, [sc in ea of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] seven times, sl st in first st to join—28 sts.

    Rnd 5 (increase): ch 1, [1 sc in ea of the next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc] four times, sl to join end of rnd to beg—32 sts.

    Rnd 6: ch 1, sc in ea st around, sl st in first st to join.

  4. Hat Body

    Begin working in Moss Stitch pattern.

    Rnd 7 (increase): ch 1, [sc in next sc, ch 1] 32 times, sl st to first st to join—32 sc, 32 ch sts.

    Rnd 8 and all remaining rnds: ch 1, [sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip next sc] 32 times, sl st to join end of rnd to beg.

    Rep last rnd until the beanie measures 6-1/2 inches from center of ring or to desired depth. The sample hat was worked in 24 rounds.

    Tip

    To see if your hat is tall enough, place a pin through the active loop and try it on. Keep going if you need more inches, and undo a round or two if you need fewer.

  5. Finishing

    Leaving about 6 inches of yarn for weaving in, fasten off. Weave in any loose ends. Block crochet hat if desired for a more finished look.
