One of the most magical things about crochet is that you can create functional, beautiful items even when you're very new to the craft. After learning just a few basic crochet stitches, you can make a variety of square and rectangular patterns. For example, you can crochet a blanket.

All of these easy crochet afghan patterns are selected with the beginner in mind. They use basic crochet stitches, don't require any shaping, and have clear instructions to make it easy for you to follow along. Although there are some great crochet baby blanket patterns available for beginners, each of these is sized to fit an adult (although could be made smaller for little ones).

    Large Granny Square Crochet Blanket

    Purl Soho

If you want an easy crochet afghan pattern then you just need to learn how to crochet a granny square. You can grow it to be any size that you desire. The granny square is really forgiving of changes in yarn texture so it's okay to mix-and-match yarn for this project. This particular granny square blanket, with instructions that include color changes, is available in 4 sizes: a GIANT 108" square and a very large blanket, a smaller throw, and a baby blanket.

Another easy crochet afghan pattern is to make a whole bunch of tiny crochet squares and stitch them together into one big blanket. This blanket is made up of three-round squares. They are so simple and fun to craft. The designer offers a "join as you go" method to allow you to connect the squares as you work so that you don't have to do all of your joining at the end. Even if you're new to joining, you should have all of the information that you need here, because the designer has included video tutorial links along with detailed written instructions.

This crochet blanket is designed with squares as well. However, instead of working them in the round, you create them by working in rows, which some beginners prefer. Modified Moss Stitch Crochet Afghan

    Modified Moss Stitch (crochet)

    Adventures in Crochet and Stitching

Moss stitch, like linen stitch, combines two basic crochet stitches to create texture. In this case, you work a single crochet and double crochet together in one stitch, then you skip over the next stitch. You repeat it again and again, across the row, and from row to row. It's easy and you'll get the hang of it quickly. In the end you'll have a beautiful crochet blanket. Use self-striping yarn to avoid color changes and weaving in ends.

    Easy Bulky Crochet Afghan

    Crochet Afghan Pattern

    Rescued Paw Designs

This crochet blanket pattern uses single crochet and double crochet stitches. Like the one above, you'll sometimes work multiple stitches into one stitch, effectively creating a row of granny stitches on every other row of this pattern. It's a great design and one that's easy for beginners to master. Plus this easy afghan is worked up in a super bulky yarn so it comes together very quickly. You'll be very satisfied if you decide to make your first ever crochet blanket with this pattern.
