Do you love crocheting granny squares? Are you constantly on the lookout for new granny square patterns, not to mention new ways to use them? If so, here's an idea you might be interested in trying. It's a simple system for designing your own flat rectangular or square crochet projects, such as placemats, pillows or afghans, using granny squares.

I thought of this idea at around the same time I designed the little square you see pictured here in this blog post. I'm sure it isn't a brand new idea; someone somewhere must have had this sort of idea before. But, the idea seemed so simple and useful to me that I had to write it down and share it.

How to design your own crochet project(s) using small granny squares.

If you think you'd enjoy crocheting a set of placemats, or maybe a scarf or a pillow or another rectangular / square project using grannies, I invite you to give this a try.
