How Do You Hold This Thing, Anyway?

The Knife Grip

I've updated our page about how to crochet with a brand new link:

How to Hold a Crochet Hook.

The truth is, there are zillions of ways you could hold a crochet hook. I haven't covered all of them, and even if I tried, I'm sure someone somewhere would come up with another way I haven't thought of.

What I'm covering in this brief article is a couple of very simple suggestions -- intended to help people get a grip (haha!) on a couple of the most popular approaches to holding a crochet hook.

That's it.

Beyond that, it's up to you to figure out which way would be most comfortable for you. I'm not here to tell you how you "should" hold the hook, because really, that's for you to decide!

I used the knife grip for YEARS, and could never get anything to turn out right. I was talking to my aunt who has crocheted forever and she suggested I hold the hook like a pencil…PERFECT! I now make and sell afghans. So if your work isn’t coming out right, it could be the way you hold the hook!

Rachel, thanks so much for sharing your experiences. It’s great to know that you found a way of holding the hook that works well for you. Everyone’s a little different when it comes to finding the method that works best! So yes, it’s definitely good to experiment!

Thanks again for the insight!
