How to Do a Pineapple Motif
From your Crochet Guide

Understanding how the crocheted pineapple shape is formed will help you in crocheting patterns which contain pineapple lace variations. Once you know how to crochet this basic pineapple motif, you might also make up variations of it to use within your own designs.

Difficulty Level: Average    Time Required: 20 minutes

Here's How:
  1. Chain 4 (counts as first double crochet).
  2. Work (1 double crochet, chain 2, 2 double crochet) all in the 4th chain from the hook.
  3. Chain 4 to turn (counts as first treble), work 12 trebles in the chain-2 space. (13 trebles)
  4. Chain 4 to turn (counts as first treble), skip first treble, work (chain 1, treble) in each treble across, ending with the last treble worked in the top of the chain-4.
  5. Turn. Work (chain 3, single crochet) in the first chain-1 space, (chain 3, single crochet) in each chain-1 space across. (12 chain-3 spaces)
  6. Turn. Skip the first chain-3 space, work (chain 3, single crochet) in each chain-3 space across. (11 chain-3 spaces)
  7. Turn. Skip the first chain-3 space, work (chain 3, single crochet) in each chain-3 space across (you will have one less chain-3 space at the end of each row).
  8. On following rows, continue to repeat step 7; eventually you will have a row with only one chain-3 in that row. End off.

Tips:

  1. You can vary the size of a pineapple motif by making more trebles in step 3 for a larger motif or less trebles in step 3 for a smaller motif.
  2. Browse through the photos of pineapple patterns at the link below to see what kinds of stitches have been used around the basic pineapple motifs ... and then dream up your own variations.
