(In crochet patterns of that era, dc = sc, t = dc, tt = tr. As you can see, the way instructions were explained differed greatly too.)
For comparison: Rings and Roses Instructions as they appeared in the original 1914 directions:
Large Ring - ch. 40, join. 67 dc under 40 ch., 67 dc. on dc. - Small Rings - ch. 30, loop through large ring, join. 48 dc. under 30 ch., 48 dc. on dc., rp, making 3 small, one large, 7 small, one large and 3 small rings. see illustration - Rose - Ch. 9, join. - 1st R. 12 dc under 9 ch., ch 5, 1 dc. in ea. 12 dc. - 2nd R. Ch. 5, sk. 1 dc, 1 dc. in next dc. of 1st dc., rp. 5 times - 3rd R. 1 dc., 6 t., 1 dc. under ea 5 ch. - 4th R. Ch. 7, 1 dc. on each dc. back of leaf. - 5th R. 1 dc., 3 t., 3 tt., 3 t., 1 dc in ea. 7 ch. - 6th R. Ch. 9, 1 dc. on ea. dc. back of leaf. - 7th R. 1 dc., 3 t., 5 tt., 3 t., 1 dc., under ea. 9 ch.
That's it! That's all the instructions that were printed in the original 1914 pattern. As you can see, I added a lot of instructions to help you in recreating this vintage design.
Just FYI - Per copyright laws, a person can't legally claim any copyright of their own for
recharting or rewriting instructions to another designer's pattern that is currently
under copyright protection, since variations of that copyrighted pattern are also protected
for the copyright holder. You can read for yourself how copyright law protects variations of
a copyrighted work, at the U.S. Government Copyright Office web site -
http://www.loc.gov/copyright
If a pattern (copyright before the year 1923) has
fallen into the public domain, then new copyright can be applied to variations
of (also called derivitive works of) that public domain pattern.
How long does copyright last? See US Government Copyright Office web site at http://www.loc.gov/copyright.
