Materials
6 ounces worsted weight yarn, any color
Size G crochet hook

Finished size 18 1/2 inches x 18 1/2 inches

Gauge1 V-Stitch plus 1 double crochet = 1 inch
2 double crochet rows = 1 inch

To start:
Leave about a six inch length of yarn before the first loop of your starting chain. Leave this length hanging while you are crocheting the blanket. You will weave this length in when the blanket is finished. (This is a good way to secure the end so it won't unravel.)

This link will take you to step-by-step photos for How to Make a Starting Chain.

Starting chain chain 70.
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, single crochet in each chain across. (69 single crochet)

This next photo shows you how to do the V-stitch that you will be crocheting in row 2.

This illustrates how to double crochet in next single crochet, chain 1, double crochet in same single crochet when you are doing row 2.

Row 2: chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), double crochet in each of next 2 single crochet, * skip next single crochet, (double crochet in next single crochet, chain 1, double crochet in same single crochet), skip next single crochet, double crochet in next single crochet *, repeat from * to * 14 more times, skip next single crochet, (double crochet in next single crochet, chain 1, double crochet in same single crochet), skip next single crochet, double crochet in last 3 single crochet.

In row 2, it says to skip next single crochet; this illustrates skipping a stitch:

skip next stitch (white circle indicates the stitch that would be skipped)
Here's a close-up so you can see what the stitches look like in row 2.

Row 3: chain 3 (counts as 1st double crochet), double crochet in next 2 double crochet, * skip next double crochet, (double crochet in chain 1 space, chain 1, double crochet in same chain 1 space), skip next double crochet, double crochet in next double crochet * , repeat from * to * 14 more times, skip next double crochet, (double crochet in chain 1 space, chain 1, double crochet in same chain 1 space), skip next double crochet, double crochet in last 3 double crochet.
Rows 4 - 36: Repeat row 3.
Row 37: chain 1, single crochet in first 4 double crochet, * single crochet in chain 1 space, single crochet in next 3 double crochet * , repeat from * to * across row, single crochet in last double crochet.

End off, leaving a length of yarn about 6 inches long. Weave in ends, using a large-eye yarn needle.

How to work the double crochet stitches in the chain 1 space:

Step 1: yarn over hook, insert hook in space under the chain 1
Step 2: yarn over hook, pull loop through chain 1 space
Step 3: yarn over hook, pull through two loops on hook
Step 4: yarn over hook, pull through two loops on hook (double crochet made)
Step 5: chain 1
Step 6: double crochet in same chain 1 space
Step 7: skip next double crochet, double crochet in next double crochet
