Directions are for a hat of 22" headsize.
CROCHET ABBREVIATIONS
ch . . . chain
sc . . Single Crochet
dc . . Double Crochet
tr c .. Treble Crochet
st . . . Stitch
sts . . Stitches
sl st .. Slip Stitch
STITCH:
Use Single Crochet throughout picking up both loops except
where otherwise specified. Star Stitch for brim only.
STAR STITCH:
Ch 3.
1st row: Thread over, insert hook in
second ch from hook, pull through, thread over, insert
hook in same stitch as last sc, pull through, thread over,
skip one st, insert hook in next st, pull through,
thread over and pull through the 7 loops
on hook, ch 1. (The ch-1 forms an eye.) * Thread
over, insert hook in eye just made, pull through,
thread over, insert hook in same st as last sc, pull
through, thread over, skip one st, insert hook in
next st, pull through, thread over and pull through
the 7 loops on hook, ch 1. Repeat from * to end of row.
2nd row: Thread over, insert hook in second
ch from hook, pull through, thread over,
insert hook in last eye of previous row, pull through,
thread over, insert hook in next eye, pull through,
thread over and pull through the 7 loops on hook,
ch 1. * Thread over, insert hook in eye just made,
pull through, thread over, insert hook in next eye,
pull through, thread over, insert hook in next eye,
pull through, thread over and pull through the 7
loops on hook, ch 1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Sandi's Note: (We would call these rounds today but in 1938, the directions were written calling them rows.)
TO START:
Ch 5 and join with sl st to form ring.
Row 1: Make 6 sc's in ring.
Row 2: Make 2 sc's in each st of previous row.
Row 3: * Make 1 sc in each
of the next 3 sts, 2 sc's in next st and
repeat from * to end of row. (Will form 3 points.)
Rows 4 - 14: Make 1 sc in each st, 2 sc's at each point, 1 increase in between points.
Rows 15 - 17: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row and 2 sc's at each point.
Rows 18, 19: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row.
1st Shingle:Row 20: Turn work on right side and make 1 sc in each st of 19th row, picking up remaining loop, 2 sc's at each point, 1 increase in between points.
Row 1: Turn work on wrong side and make 1 sc in each st of previous row, 2 sc's at each point, picking up back loop only.
Rows 2 - 4: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row and 2 sc's at each point. End off.
Rows 21 - 25: Work same as 4th row.
Row 26: Work same as 15th row.
2nd Shingle:Row 27: Work same as 20th row picking up remaining loop of 26th row.
Row 1: Work same as 1st row in 1st shingle.
Rows 2 - 5: Work same as 2nd row in 1st shingle.
Rows 28 - 32: Work same as 4th row.
Row 33: Work same as 15th row.
3rd Shingle: Work same as 2nd shingle.Row 34: Turn work on right side and work same as 15th row picking up remaining loop of 33rd row.
Rows 35 - 42: Work same as 15th row.
4th Shingle:Row 43: Turn work on right side and make 1 sc in each st of 42nd row, picking up remaining loop.
Row 1: Work same as 1st row in 1st shingle.
Rows 2 - 7: Work same as 2nd row in 1st shingle.
Row 44 - 46: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row.
Row 47: Ch 3, work same as 1st row of star sts and join with sl st to ch-3 at start.
Rows 48 - 50: Ch 3, work same as 2nd row of star sts and join each row to ch-3 at start.
Row 51: Make 1 sc in each eye and in top of each st before eye in previous row.
Rows 52, 53: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row and make sufficient increases or decreases for desired headsize.
End off.
