Cover mould in single crochet (about 11 rows), changing colors as desired. Directions suggest that on the underside of the button you crochet rounds of very loose double crochet. On the 11th row from center of button tie fringe in length desired (sample shows fringe 10 inches long), using same combination of colors that you used to cover the button-mould. In the center on flat side of button tie in more fringe until the tassel is the thickness you want. Attach a cord to top of tassel for hanging. |
In the original 1917 publication, this tassel is shown attached to the bottom of a crocheted purse.
Note I rewrote some of the wording of the pattern to make it easier for today's crocheters to understand.

1917 directions say: Ch 6, with green, make 2 rows in dc,
1 row of 741 (a light Mode shade), 1 row of green dc. Finish with
shell in green. Last row 741. Continue to the center to under part of
mould in dc. Tie in fringe in two colors as noted above.
Sandi's suggested directions: Chain 6, join to form a ring. Ch 3, make 12 dc in ring. (Change colors as desired on following rounds.) Rnd 2: (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) repeat around. Rnd 3: (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) repeat around. Rnd 4: (dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc) repeat around. Rnd 5: (skip 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc) repeat around. Insert button-mould. Rnd 5: dc in ea dc around. Following rounds: Continue in dc to the center of the underside of mould. Tie on fringe towards outer edge on underside, using combination of colors desired. |
