Close-fitting Shell Stitch Hat
1940s - 1950s Style

Original directions called for F & K brand Soutache or Ribbonette or 7 tubes Corde, using a no. 5 bone crochet hook. (Substitute yarn of your choice.)
ch . . . chain
sc . . Single Crochet
dc . . Double Crochet
st . . . Stitch
sts . . Stitches
sl st .. Slip Stitch
Ch 5, join, ch 3, 24 dc in ring.
Row 1: * Skip 1 st, 3 dc (shell) in next st, skip 1, 1 sc in next st *. Repeat between * around row, join, ch 3.
Row 2: * 5 dc in sc of row below, 1 sc in 2nd st of shell. Repeat between * around row, join, ch 3.
Row 3: Same as Row 2, with the exception that you sc in 3rd st of shell and work shell in sc, Join, ch 3.
Row 4: Same as Row 3.
Row 5: * 7 dc in sc, 1 sc in 3rd st of shell *. Repeat between * around row.
Row 6: Same as Row 5, with the exception that you sc in 4th st of shell.
Rows 7, 8, 9: Same as Row 6.
Row 10: Work 1 row of sc around hat holding it in to fit head, if necessary.
