Front Post Stitches and Back Post Stitches
![]() |
A post stitch is worked around the post of a stitch in a row below, instead of being worked under the top loop of the stitch as you normally would. The two different looks are created by inserting the hook front-to-back-to-front around the post for front post stitch or by inserting the hook back-to-front-to-back around the post for back post stitch. The stitches that look more like single crochet stitches in this image are back post stitches. A pattern of alternating sections of front and back post stitches as shown in this image is referred to as a basketweave pattern. |

Image showing a larger area of the pattern is a scan (of as much of the afghan as I could fit on the scanner) of an afghan I made from the "Pretty Baskets" pattern in Vanna's Afghans A to Z: 52 Crochet Favorites. Afghan is made all in one color in the A to Z book, but I made mine with alternating sections of light tan and tan fleck yarn. The post stitches create a nice woven effect and make a very warm afghan!
