Word Ann for Name Doily or Cross-Stitch on Crochet
Instructions by Sandi Marshall
The chart on the left is turned sideways for working in filet crochet, beginning with the row on the bottom and working up the chart, row by row. Treat the black, green and red squares all as solid mesh and the white squares as open mesh. Some of the squares are in colors so that this same chart could also be used for cross-stitch.
Starting Chain for Working Chart Sideways: All the letter charts are the same height so any of the charts can be started on the side, (which is the left-hand side of a chart that is not turned), with a starting chain of 72 chains for 4-dc mesh filet crochet. Begin with a dc in the 9th chain from the hook (to form the first open mesh of row 1).
If you want to work the chart in filet crochet, but want to begin on the long bottom edge of a chart that is not turned, I've given instructions on the Checkered Alphabet Letter Index Page for coming up with the starting chain for this. To see an example of a starting chain figured from the number of chains given for each individual letter chart, see: How to Figure Out the Ann Chart Starting Chain For Long Edge.
