From crochet.about.com - Split Circles Shawl With Scalloped Edging

Pattern Created by Sandi Marshall

On the center portion of this shawl, openwork and solid sections form the design. An optional contrasting color design can be added in surface stitches along several rows. A scalloped pineapple edging completes the design.

Printing: If only the ad at the top of the page prints, try this: before choosing the Print command, click on the pattern portion of the page (tells your printer what part of the page you want to print), then choose Print. Use Print Preview (click on File, then Print Preview at the top of your Internet browser) if you want to see ahead of time what will print.

Materials Used In The Example: About 14 oz. worsted weight yarn for Color A and 4 oz. for Color B, US size H hook
Finished Size: About 18 inches wide x 72 inches long (not counting fringe)
Gauge: 2 dc rows = 1 inch, 7 dc = 2 inches
Abbreviations: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, sc = single crochet, sl st = slip stitch, v-st = v-stitch

How To Slip Stitch (sl st) = Insert hook in stitch, wrap yarn over hook, pull yarn through the stitch and through the loop on the hook, at the same time.

The following scalloped pineapple edging is also an original design by me (Sandi Marshall). It is copyright protected, the same as the shawl design. Your respect of these terms of use can help make it possible for me to continue to make my originally designed patterns available on the Internet. Every person makes a difference (positive or negative). Thank you in advance for making yours a positive difference. I appreciate it.

I designed a pineapple edging in Fall 2005, then I created three different versions of that same pineapple edging before I was satisfied that this one best complimented my Sandi's Cape design. I've adapted my pattern for that same edging to fit across this Split Circles Shawl (in January 2007).

Used in Center Surface Crochet: At the following link, you can see photos showing how to work a stitch around a dc post at http://crochet.about.com/library/blscdpost.htm
Center Surface Crochet (Optional): Leaving a strand of yarn hanging of the length that you want the fringe to be, attach the yarn around the end dc post of row 5 (center row of color A section). With wrong side of the scarf facing you, ch 3, skip next dc post, sl st around next dc post, ch 5, skip next v-stitch, sl st around next dc post, * (ch 3, sl st around next dc post) 6 times, (ch 5, skip next v-stitch, sl st around next dc post, ch 1, sl st around next dc post) twice, ch 5, skip next v-stitch, sl st around next dc post **, repeat the directions between * and ** 8 more times, then (ch 3, sl st around next dc post) 6 times, ch 5, skip next v-stitch, sl st around next dc post, skip next dc post, sl st around last dc post. Leave a strand of yarn at the end of the length that you want for fringe. I also added an additional fringe to this row in the contrast color.
Other Center Surface Crochet Row: Leaving a strand of yarn hanging of the length that you want the fringe to be, attach the yarn around the end dc post of row 18 (center row of the solid circles on the second color A section). Repeat the Center Surface Crochet instructions along this row.

Add fringe to the shawl short ends, in the length of fringe that you desire. The following link gives instructions and a photo showing how to add fringe: http://crochet.about.com/od/clothingforwomen/ss/swskscarf_4.htm
