I created this scarf pattern, using the antique 1917 pineapple stitch. This scarf is worked in long rows, so that there is no weaving in of ends. A length of yarn is left at the beginning and end of each row for fringe. As I crocheted my sample scarf for this pattern, I discovered some extra hints that I have added to my directions, to help make it easier and more enjoyable for you to crochet this type of stitch pattern. I created this pattern in April 2005 but hadn't typed up my handwritten directions to place the pattern on this web site until now, January 2006.

Materials Used In The Example:
Caron Simply Soft (Light Worsted Weight) yarn, in the following colors:
Color A: Black, color #9727
Color B: Embroidery Print, color #9811
Hook: US Size I crochet hook

Adult Finished Size, when made with materials above:
62 inches long (not counting fringe) x 3 inches wide

Gauge: 4 1/4 pineapple stitches = 2 inches

Important - Right side of the scarf is always facing you in this pattern (do not turn the piece over at the end of a row). To begin the next row, attach the yarn in the first stitch that was worked at the beginning of the previous row.

Starting Chain: Leave a length of yarn for fringe before your first chain loop. With color A - Ch 260. (For a child length scarf, chain 218.)

Row 1: Insert hook in the 4th chain from the hook, yarn over hook, draw yarn though the chain (leave this loop on the hook), skip 1 chain, insert hook in next chain, yarn over hook, draw yarn through that chain (you should now have 3 loops on the hook), yarn over hook, draw through all 3 loops on the hook, chain 1 (loosely). Image at left shows the next three steps in crocheting the pineapple stitch. * Step 1. Insert hook in the same stitch as last loop. Yarn over hook. Draw loop through this stitch. Step 2. Skip next chain. Step 3. Insert hook in next chain. Yarn over hook. Draw loop through this chain. Step 4. Yarn over hook. Draw through the three loops on the hook. Step 5. Chain 1 (loosely). Repeat from * across the row. When one chain remains to be worked in, insert hook in the same stitch as last loop, draw the 2nd loop through the last chain (then draw a loop through all three loops on hook, chain 1 to close the pineapple stitch). Fasten off, leaving a length of yarn for fringe.

Row 2: Keep the right side of the piece facing you. With color A: Leaving a length of yarn for fringe, attach yarn in the first stitch that was worked at the beginning of the previous row (attaching in the first loop on the edge). Insert hook in same stitch as where yarn was attached, yarn over hook, pull yarn through the stitch, chain 1. Again, insert hook in same stitch as where yarn was attached, yarn over hook, draw loop through through this stitch (keep loop on hook), insert hook in next chain-1 loop, yarn over hook, draw loop through this chain-1 loop (keep loop on hook), yarn over hook, draw yarn through all three loops on hook. Chain 1 (loosely). * Insert hook in same chain-1 loop just used, yarn over hook, draw yarn through this chain-1 loop (keep loop on hook), skip next stitch, insert hook in next chain-1 loop, yarn over hook, draw loop through this chain-1 loop (keep loop on hook), yarn over hook, draw yarn through all three loops on hook. Chain 1 (loosely). Repeat from * as many times as needed to reach the end of the row. At the end of the row, (to keep the ends even) you will need to do one final pineapple stitch: insert hook in last stitch of the row (that was already used as the 2nd part of the pineapple stitch just made), yarn over hook, draw a loop through the stitch (keep loop on hook), insert hook in edge loop of last pineapple stitch of previous row, draw yarn through (keep loop on hook), yarn over hook, draw through the three loops on the hook, chain 1 to close this pineapple stitch. Fasten off yarn, leaving a length for fringe.

Note About The End Of The Rows: If you find that each row is shorter than the last, then you are missing crocheting the last pineapple stitch of the row. Hint: Because the ch-1 of the last pineapple stitch of the row is drawn up tightly enough to sometimes make it difficult to work in, I find it easiest in the last stitch, to draw up the last loop in the outside edge loop of the pineapple stitch itself (as instructed for the end of each row in my directions).

Chain 1 (loosely). * Insert hook in same chain-1 loop just used, yarn over hook, draw yarn through this chain-1 loop (keep loop on hook), skip next stitch, insert hook in next chain-1 loop, yarn over hook, draw loop through this chain-1 loop (keep loop on hook), yarn over hook, draw yarn through all three loops on hook. Chain 1 (loosely). Repeat from * to end of row. Row 5: With color A, repeat row 3.
Row 6: With color B, repeat row 4.
Row 7: With color A, repeat row 3.
Row 8: With color B, repeat row 4.
Row 9: With color A, repeat row 3.
Row 10: With color A, repeat row 4.
Row 11: Leaving a length of yarn for fringe, attach color A in the first stitch that was worked at the beginning of the previous row. ch 1, sc in first st, * ch 1, skip next pineapple st, sc in next ch-1 space, ** repeat the directions between * and ** across. At the end of the row, sc in last sc.
Extra Fringe: Add additional fringe to the edges, in the amount desired.
