Abbreviations used in this pattern: ea = each, ch = chain, sc = single crochet, st = stitch, sts = stitches, tr = treble

Materials: Crochet Cotton Thread (size #10 used in model for a 3" square)
Size 8 steel crochet hook used for model.

Crochet this pattern with yarn for a larger square.

Directions:
Note: For each knot stitch in this pattern, you will make the first loop equal to about the width of two stitches.

Chain 30.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea sc across. (29 sc)
Row 2: sc in ea sc across.
Row 3: ch 1, sc in first 2 sc (work 2 knot stitches, skip next 5 sc, sc in next 5 sc) twice, work 2 knot sts, skip next 5 sc, sc in last 2 sc.
Row 4: ch 3 (counts as first treble), tr in next sc, (work knot stitch, next between the 2 knot stitches of previous row: sc in the closing loop of the first knot stitch directly below; work knot stitch, tr in next 5 sc) twice, (work knot stitch, next between the 2 knot stitches of previous row: sc in the closing loop of the first knot stitch directly below; work knot stitch, tr in last 2 sc.
Row 5: ch 1, sc in first 2 tr (ch 5, skip knot stitches, sc in next 5 tr) twice, ch 5, skip knot stitches, sc in last 2 tr.
Row 6: ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, (5 sc in ch 5 space, sc in next 5 sc) twice, 5 sc in ch 5 space, sc in last 2 sc.
Row 7: ch 1, sc in first 7 sc, work 2 knot stitches, skip next 5 sc, sc in next 5 sc, work 2 knot stitches, skip next 5 sc, sc in last 7 sc.
Row 8: ch 3 (counts as first tr), tr in next 6 sc, work knot st; between 2 knot sts of previous row: sc in closing loop of first knot st directly below; work knot stitch, tr in next 5 sc, work knot st; between 2 knot sts of previous row: sc in closing loop of first knot st directly below; work knot stitch, tr in last 7 sc.
Row 9: ch 1, sc in 7 tr, ch 5, skip knot sts, sc in next 5 tr, ch 5, skip knot sts, sc in last 7 tr.
Row 10: ch 1, sc in 7 sc, 5 sc in ch-5 space, sc in next 5 sc, 5 sc in ch-5 space, sc in last 7 sc.
Rows 11 - 14: Repeat rows 3 - 6.
Rows 15 - 18: Repeat rows 7 - 10.
Row 19: sc in ea sc across.

Work a round of single crochet completely around all four edges of the square. End off.

Hint: To make a scarf with this, keep repeating rows 3 - 10 for length desired, then work one row of sc on the end and do your round of single crochet around the outside edges to give it a finished look.
