Adding The Marker Tail To The Vs and Fans Bookmark Pattern

by Sandi Marshall

Following are directions for adding the tail to the Vs and Fans Bookmark. The directions for crocheting the bookmark are on page one of this pattern at http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa031206.htm

Directions:
How To Slip Stitch (sl st) = Insert hook in stitch, wrap yarn over hook, pull yarn through the stitch and through the loop on the hook, at the same time.

(Optional) Bead - If you are planning to add a bead to the end of the crocheted bookmark tail, then string the bead on the crochet thread before attaching the crochet thread to the bookmark. If you prefer, you could sew a bead to the end of the tail later, when the bookmark is finished. Or you may prefer not to add a bead at all.

Attach the crochet thread in the 3rd chain-2 space from the edge on the short end on the bottom of the bookmark (refer to photo to see the placement of this).
Short Row 1: ch 6, skip next ch-2 point, sl st in next ch-2 (refer to photo).
Short Row 2: ch 1, turn, make 7 sc in ch-6 space just made, then sl st back in the same place where the thread was attached.
Tail: turn, sl st in ea of first 4 sc just made (to reach the center of the loop), ch 4, dc in same sc (at base of ch-4 just made), * turn, sl st in the center of the loop that was formed by the ch-4 and the dc just made, ch 4, dc in the center of the same loop **, repeat the directions between * and ** 15 more times.
Adding A Bead: If you used the method of stringing a bead onto the thread ahead of time, then this is the point where you would draw the bead up close to the last stitch made.
Second Part Of The Tail: Then, sl st in the center of the loop just made, ch 5, then, working along the side of the line of loops, sc in the side of the next loop. (ch 3, sc in the side of the next loop) 15 times, then ch 3, sl st back in the same place as the base of the first ch-4 made for the tail, then, working along the second half of Short Row 2, sl st in the last 4 sc of Short Row 2, sl st in the ch-2 point of bookmark edging (the ch-2 point that is right next to the last sc just slip stitched into). End off. Weave in ends.
