From crochet.about.com - Aircraft Sampler Afghan Square Number One
Designed by Sandi Marshall

The example on the left shows the airplane crocheted in one solid color. On the right, I've shown how the airplane looks with a bit of detail added in a lighter color. Crochet it whichever way you like the best. How to change colors in crochet: http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa072697.htm

Each square on the chart = 1 single crochet stitch.
Starting Chain For Chart: 36 chains for single crochet or 35 chains for afghan stitch.
Materials Used In The Example:
Worsted weight yarn - 2 oz. lt blue for background
1/2 oz. dark hunter green for airplane
small amount lighter shade of green for airplane detail
US Size G crochet hook
Written Row by Row Instructions For This Chart are at http://crochet.about.com/library/n040403.htm
Finished Size For One Square: 10" x 8 1/2"
Gauge: 7 single crochet = 2 inches, 8 rows = 2 inches
In the example, I crocheted the colors in, following the chart. If you preferred, you could use this same chart to do the airplane in cross-stitch on an afghan stitch or single crochet background.
If you wish to make a plain crocheted background to cross-stitch the design on, starting chain is 36 chains for single crochet or 35 chains for afghan stitch. Work this background for 35 rows. One option is to crochet the background piece in the background color only and then cross-stitch the airplane portion.
When all rows on chart are crocheted, you may wish to add a border in single crochet around the outside edge of the piece. Be sure to work multiple stitches, such as 3 sc or (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner stitch to keep the corner areas from curling.
