From crochet.about.com - Drawstring Tote Free Pattern
With Optional USA Liberty Bell In A Contrasting Color
Tote Pattern by Sandi Marshall

A handy crocheted tote, with a drawstring top and an example showing an optional color pattern of a USA liberty bell added to the front of the bag. You could also make the tote all in one solid color (without the liberty bell added).

Printing This Page: If only the ad at the top of the page prints, try this: before choosing the Print command, click on the pattern portion of the page (tells your printer what part of the page you want to print), then choose Print.

Abbreviations - ch = chain, dc = double crochet, sc = single crochet, sp = space, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch, sts = stitches

Example is made with a light worsted weight yarn and a U.S. size G hook. I used Caron Simply Soft to crochet the example. It takes about 5 oz. for the main color and less than 1 oz. for the liberty bell in a contrasting color (liberty bell is optional). Caron Simply Soft colors that I used: color 9703 Bone for main color and color 9608 Blue Mint for the Liberty Bell portion (the Blue Mint is a Simply Soft Brites color).

Finished Size: about 10 inches wide x 10 1/4 inches tall (not counting the strap)
Gauge: 4 sc = 1 inch, 5 sc rows = 1 inch

Pattern Directions

Note: If you aren't adding the USA Liberty Bell to the front of the bag, but are making the bag all in one solid color instead, then make two pieces by following the directions for the Tote Back for both pieces (which will count as both a back piece and a front piece).
Front (With USA Liberty Bell) - Make 1.
Starting chain: With color A, chain 39.

Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in ea ch across. (38 sc)
Rows 2 - 6: Ch 1 to turn, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across. (38 sc)

Row 7: Begin following the USA Liberty Bell chart on this row. At the beginning of the row, ch 1 to turn and sc in ea sc across, making the color changes as indicated on the chart (one square on the chart equals one single crochet stitch).
Rows 8 - 24: Follow the color changes on the USA Liberty Bell chart. As before, at the beginning of the row, ch 1 to turn and sc in ea sc across, making the color changes as indicated on the chart.
After row 24, chart is done. Continue with rows in one solid color now.
Rows 25 - 44: Ch 1 to turn, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across.

Working Around The Outside: Working down the side of the piece, single crochet in the end of each row down the side, work 3 sc in the corner, then sc in ea stitch across the bottom, work 3 sc in the corner, then sc in the end of ea row along the other side (do not go across the top). End off. Weave in ends.

Back - Make 1, if you made a Front With USA Liberty Bell or Make 2, if you are making the tote all in one solid color on both the front and the back.
Starting chain: With color A, chain 39.

Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in ea ch across. (38 sc)
Rows 2 - 44: Ch 1 to turn, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across. (38 sc)
Working Around The Outside: Working down the side of the piece, single crochet in the end of each row down the side, work 3 sc in the corner, then sc in ea stitch across the bottom, work 3 sc in the corner, then sc in the end of ea row along the other side (do not go across the top).
Joining Front and Back: Place the two pieces with the wrong sides together (wrong sides facing each other, right sides on the outside). For this part, you will work through the stitches of both the front piece and the back piece at the same time, to join the two pieces. Working down the side of the piece, single crochet in ea sc (of the front piece and at the same time, each corresponding sc of the back piece) down the side, continue working through both thicknesses: work 3 sc in the corner, then sc in ea sc across the bottom, work 3 sc in the corner, then sc in ea sc along the other side (do not go across the top). Do not end off yet.
Top Round With Holes For Drawstring: Now working around the top edge, going around the joined front and back, ch 4 (counts as first dc and a ch-1), * skip next sc, dc in next sc, ch 1 **, repeat the directions between * and ** 18 times, skip the outside seam row end, then dc in next sc, repeat the directions between * and ** 18 more times, then slip stitch in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch-4 of this round.
2nd Top Round: ch 1, sc in same place as slip stitch just made, (sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc) 38 times, sc in last ch-1 sp, sl st in the beginning sc of this round.

Strap: Attach the yarn securely near the end of one side of the Outside Joining Row. For strap, chain 110. Next, sc in a stitch near the end of the other side of the Outside Joining Row, then working back in the chain just made, sl st in one loop only of ea ch until you reach the other side of the chain where it is attached to the tote. End with a sl st in the place where the yarn was attached when beginning this strap. End off. Weave in ends.

Drawstring: Chain 120. End off. Weave in ends. Tie a knot near each end of the chain to secure the ends (it also gives it a finished look). Beginning at the center front, weave the drawstring through the holes in the Top Round For Drawstring, ending up back at the center front.
