Airplane Charted Design Free Pattern

Number Five In Aircraft Chart Series
Design Created by Sandi Marshall
Follow the first chart to crochet the two main colors in on the square then use the second chart to add the extra lines, using cross-stitch to do this (explained below).

Printing: If only the ad
at the top of the page prints, try this: before choosing the Print command, click on the
pattern portion of the page (tells your printer what part of the page you want to print),
then choose Print. Use Print Preview (click on File, then Print Preview at the top of your
Internet browser) if you want to see ahead of time what will print.
I used worsted weight yarn to crochet the example, with a US size H hook. Use colors of your choice.
The chart is 35 stitches wide and 35 rows high. To crochet a square the same size as the chart,
starting chain is 36 chains for single crochet or 35 chains for afghan stitch (there is no
turning chain in afghan stitch).
For single crochet, row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. Single crochet in each chain across. (35 sc)
For single crochet, rows 2 - 35: chain 1 to turn. Following the chart for color changes,
single crochet in each single crochet across the row. (35 sc)
I crocheted the two main colors in, then did the medium blue lines
in cross-stitch on the finished square (as shown on the second chart). This way, I only had to work with three colors
when doing the crocheting (three colors on the rows which had red on some parts of the row
and only two colors at a time, where the rows consisted of light blue and gray).
Another reason for doing the blue lines afterward in cross-stitch for this design, is that I have found that, when colors are crocheted in (intarsia), where there is only one single crochet stitch of a given color, surrounded by different colors, that the one single crochet in that one color often doesn't look nice or show up well. Doing those portions in cross-stitch on the crocheted piece gives a nicer look. To do the cross-stitch, I used the same weight of yarn that I used to crochet the square.
In the photo on the left, you can see where I added a straight stitch outline around
parts of the airplane, using a darker blue. This is optional. If you like the look that this creates, you
might wish to add it to your square. For a photo showing straight stitch outlining along
single crochet stitches, scroll down the page at the following link:

The charts could be used to make afghan squares to join into an Aircraft Sampler Afghan.
