This is a wide headband (or hat with open top) that has a ghost shaped center. Crochet it for a great Halloween costume accessory.

Materials Used In The Example:
Worsted weight yarn, in the following colors:
Color A: Small amount of White for ghost
Color B: Small amount of Black for granny square behind ghost
Color C: 1/8 oz. Orange
A short strand of yarn in a darker color for the ghost eyes (such as dark blue, green, purple or black)
Hook: US Size G crochet hook

Finished Size, when made with materials above:
Ghost is 3 inches tall x 5 inches wide
Headband is 4 1/2 inches tall x 9 inches wide (when folded, with ends joined)

Gauge is not important for this project. The headband is worked in short rows (the side of the headband) so that the size can be adjusted by crocheting fewer (or more) rows.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, hdc = half double crochet,
rnd = round, sc = single crochet, sp = space, sl st = slip stitch

Starting Chain For Ghost: Chain 3, join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: ch 1, 6 sc in ring, sl st in first sc, to join.
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in ea sc around, sl st in first sc, to join.
Rnd 3 (loops): * ch 4, skip 2 sc, sc in back loop of next sc **, repeat the directions between * and ** 3 more times. These loops will be used later to attach the background square to the ghost shape.
Note: Keep the round 3 loops behind the round 4 stitches. You may want to fold the round 3 loops back and be careful not to accidentally crochet into the round 3 loops while doing round 4.
Rnd 4: Work in the front loops only for this entire round. ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times, sc in last sc, sl st in first sc, to join.
Rnd 5: ch 1, sc in ea of first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, (then, to shape arm): ch 2, 2 dc in next sc, ch 2, sl st in same sc, (end of arm shaping), sc in ea of next 3 sc, (then, to shape head): ch 3, 2 dc in same dc as last sc made, 2 tr in next sc, dc in next sc, ch 2, (end of head shaping), sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, (then, to shape other arm): 3 dc in next sc (end of arm shaping), (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times, sc in last sc, sl st in first sc, to join.
Row 6: (Short Row) ch 2, turn. dc in first sc, dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, (hdc, sc) in next sc, sc in next sc, sl st in next sc.
Row 7: (Short Row) ch 1, turn. skip sl st, sl st in ea of first 2 sc, sc in next hdc, 2 sc in next hdc, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, sl st in next dc.
Row 8: (Curlique) ch 1, turn. skip sl st, sl st in next sc, ch 12, 3 dc in 5th ch from hook, 3 dc in ea of next 6 ch, sc in last ch, sl st in next sc of row 7.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Ghost Finishing Details:
Thread a large-eye needle with a strand of dark color yarn (such as dark blue, purple or black). Leaving an end to weave in when finished, attach the yarn to the back of the ghost head (in such a way that the attaching stitch does not show through to the front). Pull the strand through to the front and using a few straight stitches for each eye, embroider eyes on the front of the ghost head. When finished, weave in ends on the back of the ghost.

Background Square Behind Ghost:
Attach Color B (black yarn in the example) in any ch-4 loop on Rnd 3 of the ghost. Have the right side of the ghost facing you as you crochet the background square (so that the right side of the background square will face the same way as the right side of the ghost shape).
Rnd 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-4 loop, * ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-4 loop **, repeat the directions between * and ** twice more, ch 2, sl st in first dc, to join.
Rnd 2 Note - Securing Ghost Head In Place: (Optional) When you are crocheting in the corner space of round 2 that is closest to the ghost head, when making the second double crochet in that corner space, after wrapping the yarn over the hook in preparation to do that second double crochet, insert the hook through a part of a stitch on the back of the ghost head (in such a way that the background color will not show through to the front of the ghost). After drawing the background color yarn through the ghost stitch, proceed with the second double crochet of the corner space for the background square. If you don't wish to use this method to secure the ghost, you can sew a stitch in the ghost head later to secure the ghost in place.
Rnd 2: sl st in ea of next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-3 sp, * ch 1, skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp **, repeat the directions between * and ** twice more, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, sl st in first dc, to join.
Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in same dc as sl st just made, sc in ea of next 2 dc, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in next ch-3 corner sp, sc in ea of next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in ea of next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, * sc in ea of next 3 dc, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in next ch-3 corner sp, sc in ea of next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in ea of next 3 dc, sc in ch-1 sp **, repeat directions between * and ** 2 more times, then sl st in first sc, to join. End off.

Headband Short Rows:
Hold the background square so that the right side of the piece is facing you and the ghost is right side up. Attach Color C (orange yarn in the example), attaching it in the right-hand side corner ch-2 space of the background square (with ghost shape right side up).
Rnd 1: ch 1, sl st in same corner ch-2 sp, another sl st in same corner ch-2 sp, sl st in ea sc across the top of the square (14 sl st), * sl st in next ch-2 corner sp, ch 1, sc in same corner ch-2 sp, sc in ea of next 2 sc, (ch 2, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc) 6 times, sc in ea of next 2 sc **, sl st in next corner ch-2 sp, another sl st in same corner ch-2 sp, sl st in ea sc across the bottom of the square, repeat the directions between * and ** one time, then sl st in first sc made in this round.
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in back loop only of ea of first 3 sc, (sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip next sc) 5 times, sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in back loop only of ea of last 3 sc.
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in back loop only of ea of first 3 sc, (ch 2, skip next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp) 5 times, ch 2, skip next sc, sc in back loop only of ea of last 3 sc.
Repeat Rows: Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have the length you need (I repeated these rows 25 more times for a size that will fit an average adult female head - total of 53 rows). The rows will stretch and you will get the best fit by deciding the size by the top of the headband (the bottom of the headband will be stretched a little more than the top while being worn on the head). When you think you're close to having the right size, try the headband around the head of the person who will be wearing it and crochet more rows, as needed (or pull some rows out, if it needs to be smaller). When satisfied that you have the right fit, end off.
Joining: Using a large-eye yarn needle, thread a strand of the Color C yarn on the needle and hand sew (with wrong sides facing you) through the front loops only of the two ends, to join.
When finished, end off. Weave in ends. Turn right side out.
