If making a crocheted background the same size as the chart, starting chain
is 26 chains for single crochet or 25 chains for afghan stitch. Crochet
25 rows. I made the sample with worsted weight yarn and a US size H hook
for an afghan square that's about 7" x 8 1/2" (includes one finishing round
in single crochet around the outside edge).
Substitute any colors that you wish to use. When doing the cross-stitch on a single crochet or afghan stitch background, work the cross-stitch in the same weight of yarn that you used to crochet the background. Thread the yarn on to a large-eye yarn needle, to do the cross-stitch. If desired, when cross-stitching is finished, use black yarn to do a straight outline stitch around the edges of the color areas.
