A Pattern From The Year 1899.
This stitch pattern is from the year 1899. I've rewritten and added to the crochet directions.
On this page, I've also given the authentic antique instructions, for comparison.

Materials Used In Example:
Size 10 crochet cotton thread
Steel crochet hook size 8
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
chs = chains
dc = double crochet
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
Starting Chain - Ch 8. Join with a sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1 - 16 sc in ring, sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2 - ch 3, dc in same place, 2 dc in ea of 15 remaining sc,
sl st in the top of the beginning ch-3. (32 dc)
Rnd 3 - * ch 12, skip 2 dc, sl st in ea of next 2 dc,
repeat from * 7 more times.
Rnd 4 - * sl st in next ch-12 loop, ch 1, 20 sc around the ch-12 loop,
sl st in sl st between loops, repeat from *.
Rnd 5 - Sl st in ea of next 8 sc (to reach the starting point for this round),
ch 5, skip 4 sc, sl st in next sc, * ch 7, sl st in 9th sc of the next loop, ch 5, skip 4 sc,
sl st in next sc, repeat from *.
Rnd 6 - Sl st in first 3 sts of the ch-5 (to reach the center of the ch-5),
* ch 7, sl st in center of next ch-5, repeat from * all around. (16 loops total).
Rnd 7 - Sl st in next ch-7 space, 5 sc in same ch-7 space (which will fill to
about the center of the chain-7 space), then, ch 5 (for picot), 5 more sc in same ch-7 space.

about the center of the chain-7 space), then, ch 5 (for picot), 5 more sc in same ch-7 space.
Repeat from * around.
Sl st in beginning sc of this round.

Note: In the rewritten directions, to write this in current United States crochet stitches, I substituted a sl st for each sc in the 1899 directions, as well as substituting an sc for each dc and a dc for each tc.
Directions From 1899:
Materials Required: M. Heminway & Sons crochet silk and
steel hook size 0 hook, given in the 1899 publication.
Following are the directions from the antique pattern book, exactly
as originally written (including punctuation) and in its entirety.
Starting Chain: Chain 8, join.
1. - 16 dc. in ring, join.
2. - Ch. 3, 1 tc. in same place, 2 tc. in each of 15 dc., join to top of 3 ch.
3. - * Ch. 12, miss 2 tc., sc. in next, sc. in next;
repeat from * 7 times.
4. - 20 dc. under each loop of 12 ch., sc. between, on wheel.
5. - Sc. in each of 8 dc., ch. 5, miss 4 dc., sc in next,
* ch. 7, sc. in 9th dc. of next loop, ch. 5, sc. in 5th dc. following,
repeat from * 6 times, fasten last ch. in st. where first ch. started.
6. - Sc. in 1st 3 sts. of 5 ch., * ch. 7, fasten under next
loop, repeat from * all around. 16 loops in all.
7. - To complete a wheel which is to be used for a tidy,
fill each loop of 7 ch. with 5 dc., ch 5, 5 dc. in same loop. For applying to a scarf-end,
or as a finish for an afghan, baste the wheels in place before completing the edge,
laying them side by side with 6 loops on the fabric, the centre of 7th loop on each
wheel touching. Button-hole closely over each loop, the fabric being cut from beneath. Then work
around 6 lower loops, with half of 7th on each side, in dc. and picots.
