From crochet.about.com - Basic Six Sided Two Round Granny Style Motif

Instructions by Sandi Marshall

Following are instructions that I worked out for a basic granny style motif that has six sides. You could make multiples of this small motif and join them to form various items. Because it takes a small amount of yarn for each motif, this could be a good way to use up scrap yarn.

Materials Used In The Example:
Mainstays (Wal-Mart brand) worsted weight yarn - color 2182 Blue Ridge (substitute any worsted weight yarn), US Size G crochet hook
Finished Size: 3 inches across
Gauge: 3 dc = 3/4 inch wide (at top of stitches), 3 dc = 3/4 inch tall
Note - Gauge is given just for your information, in case you want to make a 3 inch wide motif. Otherwise, gauge is not important for this project. You may want to experiment with other weights of yarn or thread (change hook size to correspond).

Abbreviations: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, rnd = round, sc = single crochet, sp = space, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch

Starting Chain: Chain 6. Join with a slip stitch in the first chain, to form a ring.
Rnd 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 5 times, ch 3, sl st in top of beginning ch-3 of this rnd.
Rnd 2: sl st in ea of next 2 dc, sl st in ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same ch-3 sp, * ch 2, skip next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp **, repeat the directions between * and ** 4 more times, then ch 2, skip next 3 dc, sl st in beginning ch-3 of this rnd. End off. Weave in ends.
