From crochet.about.com - Baby Chick Front View Written Instructions For Filet Crochet In A 3dc Mesh

Following are instructions written out, row by row, for crocheting this baby chick filet crochet design in a three double crochet mesh. If you are new to chart-reading, comparing the written directions to the chart, as you go along, can help you become familiar with crocheting from a chart or graph.

Abbreviations used in this pattern: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, sp = space

Materials Used In The Example:
Size 10 crochet cotton thread
U.S. Size 7 steel crochet hook
That finished size: about 3 inches square

If making the design with worsted weight yarn and a U.S. size G crochet hook, that finished size is about 8 inches square.

Instructions written by Sandi Marshall, copyright 2006, licensed to About.com, Inc.

You will turn at the end of each row.

On rows 2 - 15, the first ch 4 counts as the first dc and a chain 1.

For rows 2 - 15, where the directions say to work a dc in the next dc at the end of the row, the last dc is actually being made in the chain-4 that was made at the beginning of the previous row (with that chain-4 now being at the end of the row being worked). 3 chains count as a dc, so work the last dc of a row as follows: skip the first chain of the chain-4, dc in the next chain.

About the chart: I recharted and adapted this design --- Sandi Marshall. I added all the instructions for working the chart in filet crochet. Baby Chick Design (with no chart) was originally shown in Collection of Artistic Crochet Work, by Emma Landis Ferguson, published in the year 1916. Chart was also printed (as part of another design) in Star Needlework Journal, Vol. 4, No 4, published in the year 1919. Having been published before the year 1923, those original versions of the baby chick design are now in the public domain.
