To make a crocheted background for this design -
When working in single crochet: Starting chain is 30. Work this plain background for 30 rows. When working in afghan stitch: Starting chain is 29 chains. Work this plain background for 30 rows. After completing row 30, do a finishing edge row, like so: Working right to left, (insert hook behind next single vertical thread, yarn over, draw through two loops) repeat to the end of the row. End off. To finish the squares: Work around outer edge in single crochet, with one single crochet in end of each row and in each stitch around. In each corner stitch, you will need to work multiple stitches, such as 3 sc in each corner or (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner (use your own favorite corner stitch combination). Adding Cross-Stitch: With each stitch representing one square on the chart, and one cross-stitch X covering one stitch, follow chart to cross stitch the design on the crocheted square. Use a large-eye yarn or tapestry needle and yarn of the same weight that you used to crochet the square. Optional: I designed the center of the chart to be an open area so that you can position your family initial or another small favorite subject in the center of the butterfly circle, if you'd like to. |

Approximate finished size (for each square):
With this type of project, gauge is very flexible. Items such as
afghans and pillows made from these squares can be a wide variety of
finished sizes. I'm giving you one approximate finished size just to
give you a general idea.
With worsted weight yarn: and a size US G hook, finished size is
about 8 1/2 inches x 8 1/2 inches.
Gauge: With worsted weight yarn: 3 1/2 single crochet = 1 inch,
4 rows = 1 inch
My inspiration for this design started with a public domain single butterfly image from the year 1920. My final design emerged from a series of charting stages, where I further rearranged and added to, in each charted stage, until I was satisfied with the final resulting Butterfly Circle Design that you see here.
Even though my inspiration started with a public domain image, my design
is completely different from that image of a single butterfly which
inspired me and so please
