The chart is 55 squares wide and 55 rows high. To make a crocheted background to cross-stitch the design on, starting chain is 55 chains for afghan stitch or 56 chains for single crochet. Make 55 rows.

I've added all the instructions that are on this page. They were not in the antique pattern book.

Working the Chart in Filet Crochet
For a 4 dc mesh, starting chain is 166, plus chain 3, (which will count as first double crochet of first row). Total starting chain = 169.

Row 1: Begin by working a double crochet in the 5th chain from the hook; dc in each chain across. (55 solid mesh)

Chart is worked starting at the bottom right; work first row right to left. Second row is worked left to right. Continue alternating row directions in this same manner, following chart.

White square on the chart = an open mesh made by: chain 2, skip next chain-2 (if open mesh is below) or skip next 2 dc (if solid mesh is below), then dc in next stitch.

X square on the chart = a solid mesh made by: 2 dc in chain-2 space (if open mesh is below) or 1 dc in each of next 2 dc (if solid mesh is below), then dc in next dc.

Once you know the basics of filet crochet, written instructions are not needed for each new chart.

Approximate finished sizes in filet crochet
(once through the chart, worked in 4 dc mesh):
With size 5 thread (387 yards) and a size US 4 steel hook, finished size is about 15.2 inches x 17.4 inches.
With size 10 thread (345 yards) and a size US 7 steel hook, finished size is about 12.7 inches x 13.8 inches.
With size 20 thread (324 yards) and a size US 9 steel hook, finished size is about 12.1 inches x 13.2 inches.
With size 30 thread (302 yards) and a size US 11 steel hook, finished size is about 11.5 inches x 12.7 inches.
With fingering/baby weight yarn (756 yards) and a size US F hook, finished size is about 38.5 inches x 39.6 inches.
With sport weight yarn (877 yards) and a size US G hook, finished size is about 44 inches x 45.1 inches.
With worsted weight yarn (998 yards) and a size US I hook, finished size is about 49.5 inches x 50.6 inches.

Here's an idea: How about combining this chart with the little bird charts in a decorating scheme? The cherub in yarn as a filet crochet afghan, with the little bird charts in thread as a framed wall grouping, as well as the little birds on pillows. I'm sure you'll also think up more ideas and combinations of your own.
