From Crochet at About.com: Manto Butterfly Graph
Designed by Sandi Marshall, June 2000

I originally designed a series of charts with various butterflies in 1997. This chart is the same finished size so it can be combined with my past designs. Click here for the rest of: My Butterfly Chart Series. Chart for the Manto Butterfly is below.

Chart is free for your own personal use only (not-for-profit, noncommercial use of the pattern and items made using the pattern). You may give the finished items as gifts but may not sell them.

Asian Manto Butterfly
also called Manto Hypoleuca

This is a rare, tiny butterfly that grows to about 1 3/4 inches. It is of the Lycaenid family and is found in the lowlands of Asia.
Butterfly data is from The Encyclopedia of Butterflies by John Feltwell

To Make as an Afghan Square:
Materials
Worsted weight yarn: 1 oz. white, 1/2 oz. black, 1/2 oz. tan
Small amount turquoise or turquoise-green
Size G crochet hook
Gauge: 4 stitches = 1 inch, 4 rows = 1 inch
Apprx. size of each finished square = 10 inches

If you enjoy working with color changes, butterfly colors can be crocheted in, following the chart. The antannae, indicated on the chart, are embroidered on when the square has been completed.

Another way is to crochet the square entirely in the background color in single crochet (or in afghan stitch) and then, with yarn, using a large-eye needle, cross-stitch the butterfly design on, following the chart, in the indicated yarn colors.

Directions
With white yarn, chain 41.
Row 1 on Chart: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across.(40 sc)
Rows 2 - 40: Sc in ea sc across, making color changes as indicated on chart.
End off.

Finishing
Using a straight stitch, with black yarn or embroidery floss, embroider antennae as indicated on the chart.
