A stitch pattern with a light texture design created by crocheting in some of the back loops of the stitches. This stitch is from a vintage crochet pattern book published in the year 1917. In that book, this stitch pattern was named "Northwoods".

Following my own rewritten directions, I have given the 1917 directions. Comparing the vintage vs today's instructions can be useful in helping you more easily understand the meanings of other vintage instructions that you may come across.

My Rewritten Directions:

Materials: Use thread size or yarn weight of your choice, with corresponding size hook.

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet

Starting Chain: Multiple of 2.
Plus ... add one more chain to your starting chain.
Foundation Row: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, single crochet in each chain across.
Row 1: sc in both loops of first sc, sc in back loop only of next sc, * sc in both loops of next sc, sc in back loop only of next sc; repeat from * across, ending row with sc in both loops of last sc. Chain 1 to turn.
Row 2: sc in both loops of first sc, sc in front loop only of next sc, * sc in both loops of next sc, sc in front loop only of next sc; repeat from * across, ending row with sc in both loops of last sc. Chain 1 to turn.
Repeat rows 1 and 2: Repeat rows 1 and 2, consecutively, for pattern, until desired length is reached.

Note: When you've crocheted a few inches on your project, you'll notice that the texture of this pattern only shows up on one side of the piece; that side will be considered the right side of the item you are crocheting.

What the 1917 Directions said:

Following are the complete 1917 directions, exactly as written, in its entirety. Note: For the second row, 2D is not a typo; that's the way "2nd" was written throughout the entire book.

1st Row: *1 single crochet taking both loops, 1 single crochet taking back loop*, end each row with 1 single crochet taking both loops.
2D Row: *1 single crochet taking both loops, 1 single crochet taking front loop*.

Pattern was originally printed in the year 1917 in the book Fleisher's Knitting & Crocheting Manual, Fifteenth Edition, now old enough to be in the public domain.
