Vs and Fans Window Square
An original design by Sandi Marshall
This square has a separate layer with a different color that shows through an openwork portion of the main piece. This results in a two-color square but you only have to work with one color at a time while crocheting it. The part of each square with the double layer is thick and an afghan made with multiples of this square would be a very warm afghan.
It could be a fun scrap yarn project, experimenting with different color combinations.

Rows 12, 13: Repeat rows 9 and 10 once more.
Row 14: ch 1, sc in first dc, sc in each of next 2 dc, 2 sc in ch-2 space, * sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 in the center of the v-stitch, sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 space **, repeat the directions between * and ** once, then sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 in the center of the v-stitch, sc in next dc, 2 sc in last ch-2 space, sc in each of last 3 dc.
Row 15: ch 1, sc in back loop only of ea sc across. The remaining loops will be used later, when attaching the background panel piece.
Rows 16 - 21: ch 1, sc in ea sc across. (21 sc)
End off. Weave in ends.
The Background Piece: With the wrong side of the front piece facing you (the
side with the remaining loop showing across row 8), attach a contrasting color yarn
in the remaining loop
of the first sc of row 8. It will be easiest to crochet this row if you fold the front
piece back at row 8, while you crochet in the remaining loops across the row.
Background Piece Row 1:
ch 1, sc in the remaining loop of the first sc.
sc in the remaining loop of ea sc across. (21 sc)
Background Piece Rows 2 - 12: ch 1, sc in ea sc across. (21 sc)
Background Piece Finishing Row: sl st through both pieces at the same time
for this row, by inserting the hook through the background piece sc and also through
the remaining loop of sc of the front piece, then wrap yarn over the hook and pull the
yarn through all stitches at the same time (slip stitch made through two layers).
Make a slip stitch in the manner (through two layers) for each sc across the row. This
joins the top of the background piece to the front piece.
Adding The Outside Round: Use the same color as you used in the front piece.
With the right side of the front piece facing you, attach yarn in the first sc of the last row
at the top of the square. ch 1, sc in ea sc across the row, for corner, ch 2,
sc in end of first row along the side, sc in end of ea of next 5 rows.
* For the next part, crochet around both layers to join the edges of the
front piece and the background piece. Working around the dc posts on the edge of the
front piece and, at the same time, through the ends of the sc rows of the background piece,
work 2 sc around ea dc post on the edge of the next 6 rows of the front piece.
Now, back to working through a single layer for the single crochet rows of the front piece.
sc in end of ea of next 6 rows. ** For corner, ch 2, sc in ea sc along other side of square.
ch 2 for the next corner, sc in end of ea of next 6 rows. Repeat the directions from * to **
once. For corner, ch 2, sl st in the first sc made in this outside round.
End off. Weave in ends.

Printing This Page: I've had requests for hints for printing the patterns from this site. After clicking on File at the top of your Internet browser, you can choose Print Preview to see ahead of time what part of the page is going to print for you. With many newer printers, this gives you a printing page with no ads included. But if your printer only shows the ad at the top of the page when you try to print, try clicking somewhere on a blank area of the center portion of the page (the pattern portion), then click on File at the top of your Internet browser and choose Print. Having clicked on the pattern part of the page first tells your printer what part of the page you want to print. If there is a selection showing such as "Print Selected Frame Only" in the printer box that pops up, choose that option. If needed, there is also a Printer-Friendly Page but many newer printers will give a better printing page (with no ads) by choosing Print Preview from this main page.
