Finished Size: (not counting tabs) 13 1/2" x 15 1/2"
Gauge: 7 single crochet = 2 inches, 8 rows = 2 inches
In the example, I crocheted the colors in, following the chart (chart is
too wide to put on this page. See Chart on Printer-Friendly Page).
If you preferred, you could
use this same chart to do the hat in cross-stitch on an afghan
stitch or single crochet background.
If you wish to make a plain crocheted background to cross-stitch the
design on, starting chain is
55 chains for single crochet or 54 chains for afghan stitch. Work this
background for 54 rows. You could crochet the background piece in the
background color only and then cross-stitch the hat portion.
When all rows on chart are crocheted, you may wish to add a border in
single crochet around the outside edge of the piece. Be sure to
work multiple stitches, such as 3 sc or (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner stitch to keep the corner areas from curling.
If desired, add a small shamrock applique to the center of the buckle. You can
see how this looks in the example at the top of this page. I crocheted the shamrock
with size 10 thread and a size 8 steel hook.

An Irish Crochet Rose can add another pretty touch to your Leprechaun Hat Banner
(see example at the top of this page). I
crocheted the rose with worsted weight yarn and a size G hook.

If desired, crochet a second piece (in one solid color) of the same size
to use as a backing. When you add the single crochet round on the outside edge,
you could work through both the front and back thicknesses at the same time, to
join the two pieces.
Each square on the chart = 1 single crochet stitch.
Starting Chain For Chart: 55 chains for single crochet or 54 chains for afghan stitch.
Banner Tabs: (Make 4)
Chain 6
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. (5 sc)
Rows 2 - 10: Sc in each stitch across. (5 sc)
Fold each tab in half. Decide where you will position the tabs across
the top of the banner (you may want to pin in place before sewing).
Using yarn and a large-eye yarn or tapestry needle, sew bottom edges only
of the tabs to the top of the banner. Insert dowel through the tabs for
hanging.
