The Phylis Stitch Pattern Free Instructions

A Stitch Pattern From The Year 1917.

This stitch pattern is from the year 1917. I've rewritten and added to the crochet directions.

On this page, I've also given the authentic antique instructions. It can be interesting to see the difference between the way patterns were written in that era and now.

Worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook size G

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
chs = chains
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch

How To Slip Stitch (sl st) = Insert hook in stitch, wrap thread or yarn over hook, pull thread or yarn through the stitch and through the loop on the hook, at the same time. A slip stitch does not add any height and is used to join a chain or stitch to another place in the crochet piece.

Starting Chain - Ch 21.
Row 1 - Work 2 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. * ch 2, skip 2 chs, sl st in next ch, skip 2 chs, 3 dc in next ch **, repeat from * to ** 2 more times. Ch 1, to turn.
Row 2 - Sl st in first dc, * skip next 2 dc, 3 dc in next sl st of previous row, ch 2, sl st in next dc **, repeat from * to ** 2 more times. End with 1 dc in end stitch. Ch 1, to turn.
Row 3 - Sl st in first dc, 3 dc in next sl st of previous row, ch 2, sl st in next dc, * skip 2 dc, 3 dc in next sl st of previous row, ch 2, sl st in next dc **, repeat * to ** one more time. End with 3 dc in end stitch. Ch 1, to turn.
Repeat - Repeat rows 2 and 3 consecutively, until you have reached the length desired.

Materials Required: No materials or hook size given in the 1917 publication.
Starting Chain: No starting chain given in the 1917 publication.
Following are the directions from the antique pattern book, exactly as originally written (including punctuation) and in its entirety.
1st Row. - *Skip 2 chains, 3 double crochet in next stitch, chain 2, skip 2 chain, 1 slip stitch in next stitch*. Skip 2 chain, 3 double crochet in end stitch, turn. Chain 1.
2d Row. - 1 slip stitch in 1st double crochet, *3 double crochet in slip stitch, chain 2, 1 slip stitch in next double crochet*, 3 double crochet in end stitch, turn, chain 1.
Repeat 2d row.
