Various types of ruffles are used in vintage doily
patterns. In this pattern, the ruffles consist mainly of chains, giving an open, airy look, resembling netting. Photo above shows one half of the doily. |

Materials Size 30 crochet thread
Steel crochet hook No. 10
Doily measures 20 inches in diameter

Instructions
Beginning Chain - Chain 9. Join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: (Ch 7, 4 sc in ring) 4 times. Do not join rounds unless specified.
Rnd 2: * Ch 7, 4 sc in next loop, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * around.
Rnds 3 - 19: * Ch 7, 4 sc in next loop, sc in each sc to within last
2 sc of sc group. Repeat from * around (40 sc in each group on 19th round).
Rnd 20: * Ch 7, sc in next loop, (ch 7, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc) 9
times. Repeat from * around (40 loops).
Rnd 21: * Ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with
sl st in first sc.
Rnd 22 - 25: Sl st in center of next loop, sc in same loop, * ch 8,
sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join as before.
Rnd 26: Sl st to center of next loop, ch 12, * tr in next loop, ch 8.
Repeat from * around. Join to 4th ch of ch-12.
Rnd 27: Sc in same place as sl st, * 9 sc in next sp, sc in next tr.
Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnd 28: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 7, skip 4 sc, sc in back
loop of next sc. Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnds 29 - 32: Sl st to center of next loop, sc in same loop, * ch 7,
sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnd 33 - 37: Sl st to center of next loop, sc in same loop, * ch 8,
sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join.
Rnd 38: Repeat rnd 26.
Rnd 39: Repeat rnd 27.
LARGE RUFFLE:
Rnd 1: * Ch 5, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with
ch 2, dc at base of first loop.
Rnds 2 - 6: * Ch 6, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around,
ending with ch 3, dc in dc.
Rnd 7: * Ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending
with ch 3, tr in dc.
Rnds 8 - 12: * Ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around,
ending with ch 3, tr in tr.
Rnds 13 - 18: * Ch 8, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around,
ending with ch 4, tr in tr. Break off.
SMALL RUFFLE:
Rnd 1: Attach thread to front loop of any sc on 28th rnd,
* ch 5, sc in front loop of next sc. Repeat from * around. Work as
for large ruffle until 12 rnds are completed. Join and break off.
Starch lightly.
