Shells and Waves Afghan Square

Pattern Created by Sandi Marshall

This is an easy pattern for an afghan square in rows of shells and double crochet, finished with rounds of shells to complete the design. In portions of this square, I used the same stitch combination as in my Shells and Waves Medium Width Scarf pattern.

On the left is an example of the look of nine of these squares joined for an afghan.

Printing: Many newer printers will print fine from this page or you can use the Printer-Friendly Page. If only the ad at the top of the page prints, try this: before choosing the Print command, click on the pattern portion of the page (tells your printer what part of the page you want to print), then choose Print. Use Print Preview (click on File, then Print Preview at the top of your Internet browser) if you want to see ahead of time what will print.

Materials Used In The Examples Above: About 1 1/2 oz. worsted weight yarn for one square - I used Caron Simply Soft Tweed, color White
US size H hook
Finished Size: About 11 inches wide x 11 inches tall
Gauge: 2 dc rows = 1 inch,
4 dc = 1 inch
Gauge is not important in this afghan square unless for some reason you need the square to be a specific size.
Abbreviations: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, ea = each, hdc = half double crochet, sc = single crochet, sl st = slip stitch, sp = space

The example in green and white was crocheted with Caron Simply Soft color Sage, with Outside Rnd 7 crocheted with Caron Simply Soft Tweed, color White.

How To Slip Stitch (sl st) = Insert hook in stitch, wrap yarn over hook, pull yarn through the stitch and through the loop on the hook, at the same time.

Optional - Additional Outside Rounds: If you're trying for a certain size square and your square is not quite there, repeat Outside Rnd 9 as many times as you need to reach the size you want (each additional single crochet round will add about 1/2 inch to the finished size). For instance, if your square is 11 inches after finishing through Outside Rnd 9, repeating Outside Rnd 9 two more times will result in a square that's about 12 inches.
End off. Weave in ends.
