Crocheted Orange Spider Yarn Wristlet
An Original Design by Sandi Marshall
Materials Used In The Example:
Caron Simply Soft (Worsted Weight yarn), in the following colors:
Color A: Mango, color #9605
Color B: Limelight, color #9607
Color C: Black
Hook: US Size G crochet hook
2 small beads for spider eyes (I used green imitation pearl beads, which I found
at an A.C. Moore store. Most craft stores carry some type of hobby or craft beads.)
Finished Size, when made with materials above:
Spider Center is 2 1/2 inches tall x 3 1/2 inches wide (measuring across longest legs) and
2 1/4 inches wide (measuring across widest part of spider body)
Granny Square background is 4 1/4 inches square
Wristlet piece is 7 inches long (unfolded, before ends are joined)
and after joining, wristlet is: 4 1/4 inches tall x 3 1/2 inches wide
Gauge is not important for this project. Wrist bands come in many different widths so if yours varies from the width of the example, that's fine. The length of the wrist band determines the fit ... this is adjusted by crocheting more rows or fewer rows so that the wristband will fit the wrist of the person who will be wearing it.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
chs = chains
dc = double crochet
ea = each
hdc = half double crochet
rnd = round
sc = single crochet
sp = space
sl st = slip stitch
How To Slip Stitch (sl st) = Insert hook in stitch, wrap yarn over hook, pull yarn through the stitch and through the loop on the hook, at the same time. A slip stitch does not add any height and is used to join a chain or stitch to another place in the crochet piece. It can also be used to add a decorative ridge to the outside edge of a crocheted piece.

Starting Chain For Spider Center: With Color A, chain 5, join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: ch 1, 5 sc in ring, sl st in first sc, to join.
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in ea sc, sl st in first sc, to join. (10 sc)
Rnd 3 (loops): (ch 4, skip next 2 sc, sc in back loop of
next sc, ch 4, skip next sc, sc in back loop of next sc) twice. These loops will be used later to attach the background square to the spider shape.
Note: Keep the round 3 loops behind the round 4 stitches.
You may want to fold the round 3 loops back and be careful
not to accidentally crochet into the round 3 loops while doing round 4.
Rnd 4: Work in the front loops only of Rnd 2 for this
entire round. ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, (2 sc in next sc, sc in ea of next 2 sc) twice, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, sl st in first sc of this rnd. (14 sc)
Rnd 5: ch 1, sc in ea of first 2 sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next sc,
2 dc in next sc, dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, ch 6 for first leg, sl st in 2nd
ch from hook, sl st in ea of next 4 chs, sc in next sc, (ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook,
sl st in ea of next 4 chs, sl st in same sc at base of ch-6 just made) twice,
ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in ea of next 2 chs, (sc, dc) all in next sc,
(dc, sc) all in next sc, ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in ea of next 2 chs, sc in
next sc, (ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in ea of next 4 chs, sl st in same sc at base of ch-6 just made) twice, then ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in ea of next 4 chs, sc in ea of next 2 sc, sl st in next sc. End off.

Rnd 6: Attach color C in the sc that is right after the legs on right-hand side of spider body.
ch 1, long sc in first sc (inserting the hook in the sc 2 rows directly below to make the long sc), sc in next sc, long sc in next sc (inserting the hook in the sc 2 rows directly below
to make the long sc), sc in next sc, 2 sc in ea of next 4 sc, sc in next sc,
long sc in next sc (inserting the hook in the sc 2 rows directly below
to make the long sc), sc in next sc, long sc in next sc (inserting the hook in the sc 2 rows
directly below to make the long sc). End off color C.
Rnd 7: Attach color B in first sc of Rnd 6. sl st in ea sc of Rnd 6. End off
color B.
Sew beads for eyes to spider head. Use a needle that will fit through the hole in each bead.
I used a thin sewing needle and regular sewing thread.
Background Square Behind Spider:
Attach Color C in any ch-4 loop on Rnd 3 behind the spider shape.
Have the right side of the spider facing you as you crochet the
background square (so that the right side of the background square
will face the same way as the right side of the spider shape). Temporarily fold the spider
shape forward, as needed, while crocheting the background square rounds.
Rnd 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc),
(2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch-4 loop,
* ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-4 loop **,
repeat the directions between * and ** twice more, ch 2,
sl st in first dc, to join.
Rnd 2: sl st in ea of next 2 dc, sl st in next
ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same
ch-3 sp, * ch 2, skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2,
skip next 3 dc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp **,
repeat the directions between * and ** twice more,
ch 2, skip next 3 dc, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip next 3 dc,
sl st in first dc, to join.
Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in ea dc and also make 1 sc in ea ch-2 sp around,
with a ch-2 each time you come to a corner, then
sl st in first sc, to join. End off color C. Weave in ends.
Rnd 4: Attach color B in a ch-2 corner space. ch 1, sc in ea sc around, making (sc, ch-2, sc) in ea ch-2 corner space as you come to it, then sl st in first sc, to join. Do not end off yet.
The following photo shows how the wristlet looks when completed,
before it is folded and before the ends are sewn together. Pattern
instructions are continued below the photo.
Wrist Band Short Rows:
Now you will begin working in short rows.
Row 1: ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (ch 2, skip next sc, sc in next sc) 9 times.
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip next sc) 8 times, sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in last sc.
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (ch 2, skip next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp) 8 times, ch 2, skip next sc, sc in last sc.
Repeat Rows: Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have the length you need (I repeated these rows 4 more times for a size that will fit an average adult female wrist and will fit over the hand to put the wrist band on and off - total of 11 short rows). The rows will stretch to fit over the hand so you want the band to be loose enough for going over the hand but not overly loose around the wrist. When you think you're close to having the right size, try the wrist band around the wrist of the person who will be wearing it and crochet more rows, as needed (or pull some rows out, if it needs to be smaller). When satisfied that you have the right fit, do the Last Short Row.
Last Short Row: ch 1, sc in first sc, (sc in ch-2 sp, sc in next sc) 10 times. End off, leaving a strand of yarn for sewing the ends together.
Joining: Using a large-eye sewing needle, thread the strand of yarn on the needle and hand sew (with wrong sides facing you) through the two ends, to join.
When finished, end off. Weave in ends. Turn right side out.
