Plain Granny Becomes Fancy Christmas Square

(c) 1998 S. Marshall
Let's transform this rather plain granny square in a few easy steps. The red glitter yarn center already lends a Christmasy touch, but lets jazz it up some more to make it really special.

Here's how: Make two chains from red glitter yarn, each in a length that will fit from corner to diagonal corner.

(Leave a 5 inch long tail at the beginning and at the end to use in sewing the chain to the square.)

Make a bow from candy cane stripe yarn (or glitter yarn), like this:

Beginning chain: ch 4, (dc, ch 2, sl st) in 4th ch from hook (this is the center), ch 3, (dc, ch 2, sl st) in center, (ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook , sl st in each of next 3 ch, sl st in center) twice. End off.

(Leave a 5 inch long tail at the beginning and at the end to use in sewing the bow to the square.)

Weave a chain from one corner, through the center and to the opposite corner. Secure ends to wrong side of square. Repeat with the other chain.

Sew the bow to the center of the square. Viola!
