Using The Chart For Cross-Stitch On Crochet: Of course, you can make a crocheted background that's much larger than the chart, or ... to make a crocheted background the same basic width as the chart, add one extra stitch for each side and begin the chart cross-stitch on the second stitch in from the edge and on the second row on the finished background. This would make the starting chain = 19 chains for single crochet or 18 chains for afghan stitch (there is no turning chain for afghan stitch). Add two extra rows to the chart, so that you have one plain row (with no cross-stitch) at the bottom of the piece and one plain row (with no cross-stitch) at the top of the piece. The chart has 30 rows, so with adding the two extra rows, you will crochet 32 rows for the background piece.

Filet Crochet Help:

Working the Chart in Filet Crochet
For a 3 dc mesh, starting chain is 36 chains. Begin by working a double crochet in the 5th chain from the hook. The first row shown on the chart is solid double crochet all the way across the row (33 dc altogether). Each new row will begin with ch 3 (which counts as the first dc of the row).
Row 2 on the chart in a 3 dc mesh - written directions to help you get started: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in ea of next 2 dc, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in ea of next 7 dc, (ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc) 5 times, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in ea of next 7 dc, ch 1, skip next dc, dc in ea of the last 3 dc.

For a 4 dc mesh, starting chain is 52 chains. Begin by working a double crochet in the 5th chain from the hook. The first row shown on the chart is solid double crochet all the way across the row. Each new row will begin with ch 3 (which counts as the first dc of the row).

Chart is worked starting at the bottom right; work first row right to left. Second row is worked left to right. Continue alternating row directions in this same manner, following chart.

For this chart, I recharted and varied a portion of the Two Rabbits With Easter Egg design that was originally created by Hugo Kirchmaier in the year 1920 (having been published before the year 1923, the original version of that design is now in the public domain).
