Directions
One Method of Preparing Towel: You could use a whole towel, with embroidery chain stitches made across the center, to use for attaching the crocheted topper. See that photo tutorial at http://crochet.about.com/od/kitchenpatterns/ss/toweljoin.htm ... if you use this method, you need to have 39 embroidery chain stitches in which to work row 1 of the towel topper.
Another Method: Cut towel in half. Fold cut edge over about 1/4 inch; fold this over once more about 1/4 inch. Sew close to folded edge by hand or with sewing machine.
Using a large-eye yarn needle or a crochet hook, poke 39 holes, evenly spaced, across towel; placing holes slightly more than 1/4 inch from top edge, so holes are just below the 1/4 inch fold.

Row 1: Attach yarn in first hole (or in first embroidery chain stitch); sc in ea hole (or embroidery chain) across (depending on which method you used to prepare the towel). (You need to have 39 sc in row 1.)

Row 2: ch 1, sc in first sc, sc next two sc tog, * sc in next sc, sc next two sc tog **, repeat the directions between * and ** across, until 3 sc remain, then sc in ea of last 3 sc. (27 sc)
