Year 2006 Red Scarf Project Cover

For the 2009 project, the Orphan Foundation of America has set a Fall deadline of October 31, 2008 for contributers to mail scarves to OFA.

In previous years, Interweave Knits Magazine, The National NeedleArts Association and Lily Chin Signature Collection have endorsed the project and have helped crocheters and knitters to become aware of this charitable Red Scarf Project.

The project had been organized in 2005 to collect handknitted and crocheted scarves, made with soft yarns, preferably in shades of red, about 60 inches long and suitable for a boy or girl, for OFA to send to foster youth in Valentine’s Day care packages.

In January 2006, OFA reported that an estimated 13,000 foster youth are attending colleges and universities each year and that most of them do not have any family support.

Deadline for the 2009 project: Mail scarves between September 1, 2008 through October 31, 2008. They are able to accept scarves during those dates ONLY due to limited storage capacity. This time, they also ask to please limit donations to no more than five scarves from any one person or organization. Read why, at OFA

Remember to attach (with ribbon or string) a small tag to the scarf that reads – Handmade for You. You may also add your first name, city (and group affiliation, if any) for the benefit of the young person who receives it. Read what else you might include (see right-hand side column on that page).

For the address to send the scarves to, see the Orphan Foundation of America's Red Scarf Project FAQ (see right-hand side column on that page).
