Project Description:
Here's a free crochet pattern for a V-stitch hat. This hat is crocheted in the round using worsted weight yarn; it is embellished with a flower.
The hat is sized for teens, juniors, ladies, and adult women; it is a one-size-fits-most design.

Materials:
Yarn: 1 70 gram ball of worsted weight yarn; the yarn used in the sample is Lion Brand Wool-Ease in color #501, White Frost. This yarn is 70% acrylic, 20% wool, and 10% nylon.
Crochet Hook: Size H/8-5.00 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Flower: The flower embellishment is optional. If you want to crochet the flower, please see the materials list specified in the free flower pattern. You will also need a safety pin or needle and thread to attach the flower to the hat.
Finished Size:
When Hat Is Laid Flat: The measurement from the center of round one straight down to round 14 measures 8.5".
Circumference as Measured Around the Snug-Fitting Part of the Hat Above the Brim: Approximately 23"

Crochet Instructions:
Ch 5, Sl st. to form ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, dc in ring- counts as 1 V-stitch. (Ch 2, V-stitch in ring.) Repeat sequence in parentheses 2 more times. Ch 2, sl st to join. Work 2 sl sts to begin next round in the following ch-2 space.
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same space – counts as 1 V-stitch. (Ch 1, work a V-stitch in next V-stitch, ch 1, work a V-stitch in next space.) Repeat sequence in parentheses 2 more times. Ch 1, work a V-stitch in first V-stitch of previous round, ch 1, sl st to join.
Round 3: Work 1 sl st between first ch-3 and first dc in previous round. Ch 3- counts as 1 dc and 1 ch. (Work a V-stitch in next space, ch 1, dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1.) Repeat sequence in parentheses all the way around; end with a V-stitch in the last space. Ch 1, sl st to join.
Round 4: Ch 3, (Work a V-stitch in the next V-stitch, ch 1, V-stitch in next dc, ch 1.) Repeat sequence in parentheses all the way around for a total of 15 V-stitches. Last stitches in round – ch 1, dc in base of first ch st from the round to form another V-stitch. Ch 1, sl st to join. 16 V-stitches total including first ch-3 and last dc.
Round 5: Work 1 sl st in center of the first V-stitch, ch 3, dc in same space- counts as 1 V-stitch. (Ch 1, work a V-stitch in next V-stitch.) Repeat sequence in parentheses 15 more times for a total of 16 V-stitches. Ch 1, sl st to join.
Rounds 6 – 11: Repeat round 5.
Begin Crocheting the Brim of the Hat:
Round 12: Sl st. into center of ch-3 and first dc in previous row. Ch 3, dc in same space (Counts as 1 V-stitch.) Ch 1, V-stitch in next ch-1 space, ch 1, V-stitch in next V-stitch, ch 1.) Repeat sequence in parentheses all the way around. Sl st to join. (32 V-stitches total.)
Round 13: Sl st into center of ch-3 and first dc in previous row, ch 3, dc in same space (Counts as 1 V-stitch.) Ch 1, (Work 1 v-stitch in each V-stitch, ch 1.) Repeat sequence in parentheses all the way around. (32 V-stitches total.)
Round 14: Repeat round 13.
End off.Flower: Work the frost flower pattern if you want your hat to have a flower embellishment. Attach the flower by stitching it onto the hat or pinning it with a safety pin.
