Definition:

A granny square is a crocheted motif that can be created in infinite possible variations and colors.

A granny square is worked by crocheting a ring of chain stitches that form the center, and then crocheting a series of rounds that build outward from there.

Like the name suggests, the traditional granny square motif is square. The same basic principles can be adapted to create triangles, hexagons and other shapes as well.

The traditional granny square is constructed using double crochet stitches and chain stitches, but granny square variations can be made from any crochet stitch combination.

Examples:
My grandma crocheted me a granny square afghan.
