The photo above shows row 4 in progress. This closeup look at the stitches can help when crocheting the pattern. Following are the row 4 directions spelled out for crochet beginners (the abbreviated directions are on page 1 of this step-by-step).

Row 4: chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), double crochet in the same double crochet, * skip the next 2 double crochet, make 4 double crochet all in the chain-2 space (in center of V-Stitch) **, repeat the directions between * and ** 3 more times, then skip the next 2 double crochet, make 2 double crochet in the last double crochet.

Repeat Rows: Repeat rows 3 and 4 for pattern, as many times as needed for the length that you desire (48 inches is an average scarf length; the super long scarves that have been popular are about 95 inches in length).

Last Row: When you have the length desired, add one row in sc, working it out to have 16 sc in that row. If you end with a row 3 for the next-to-last row, then for the last row, you can do 1 sc in each dc and 1 sc in each ch-2 space, which will result in 16 sc in the row.
