Using a novelty yarn can dramatically change the look of any pattern.

Here's an example of the beginning rows of this scarf crocheted in an eyelash yarn. It's a beautiful look but I wouldn't recommend this yarn for crochet beginners. The black color makes it difficult to see the stitches (using a larger hook can help since it results in larger loops to work into at the top of the stitches, making them a bit easier to see). Experienced crocheters can figure out where the stitches should be worked but should be prepared for working with this yarn to be a bit slower than they are generally used to. This yarn can produce a beautiful result, though, so can be worth it.

The yarn that I used in this example is Filatura Lanarota Baby Lash DK, color Licorice Delight. It's an acrylic/nylon blend eyelash yarn. It comes in 1.75 Ounces (50 Grams) size skeins. This yarn is sometimes available at Smiley's Yarns in their Internet Yarn Sale of discount prices.
