Diagonal Double V-Stitch Lines Afghan Square

This afghan square is started in one corner and worked to the other corner, in a combination of double crochet and v-stitches that form the double line design. Photo of 16 Joined Squares

Materials: any worsted weight yarn, US size H hook

Special Stitch: v-stitch = (dc, ch 1, dc) all in one same place. Instruction Link: V-Stitch How-To

Abbreviations: ch = chain, chs = chains, dc = double crochet, ea = each, sc = single crochet, st = stitch, sts = stitches

Starting Chain: Leaving a length to weave in later, chain 2.
Pattern Note: Turn at the end of each row (rows are worked along two sides of the square).
Row 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Row 2: ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 2, sc in last sc.
Row 3: ch 1, sc in first sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 space, sc in last sc.
Rows 4 - 7: ch 1, sc in first sc, sc in ea sc until you reach ch-2 space, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 space, sc in ea sc to end of row.
Row 8: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in ea of next 5 sc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in ch-2 space, dc in ea of next 6 sc.
Row 9: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next dc, skip next dc, v-st in next dc, skip next dc, dc in ea of next 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 space, dc in ea of next 2 dc, skip next dc, v-st in next dc, skip next dc, dc in ea of last 2 dc.
Row 10: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next dc, skip next dc of v-st, v-st in center of v-st, skip next dc of v-st, skip next dc, v-st in next dc, skip next dc, dc in next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 space, dc in next dc, skip next dc, v-st in next dc, skip next dc, skip next dc of v-st, v-st in center of v-st, skip next dc of v-st, dc in next dc, dc in top of the ch-3 at the end of the row.

Rows 14 - 18: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next dc, skip next dc of v-st, v-st in center of v-st, skip next dc of v-st, dc in ea of next 3 dc, skip next dc of v-st, v-st in center of v-st, skip next dc of v-st, dc in ea dc until you reach the ch-2 corner, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 space, dc in ea dc until you reach the next v-st, skip next dc of v-st, v-st in center of v-st, skip next dc of v-st, dc in ea of next 3 dc, skip next dc of v-st, v-st in center of v-st, skip next dc of v-st, dc in next dc, dc in top of the ch-3 at the end of the row.
Outside Round: Work a round of single crochet all the way around the four sides, as follows: ch 1, working down the side of the square - 2 sc around ea dc post on end of ea row and sc in the end of ea sc row down this side of the square, ch 2 for corner, sc in the end of ea sc row and 2 sc around ea dc post on end of ea row along this next side of the square, ch 2 for corner, along next two sides of the square: sc in ea dc and also sc in the ch-1 in the center of ea v-st, with (sc, ch 1, sc) in the ch-2 corner between these last two sides. At end, sl st in first sc of this round. End off. Weave in ends.
