The photo above shows the join-as-you-go method used to join four crocheted afghan squares.
As you can see on the photo, there's a small space left open at the center of the four joined squares. If desired, a small crocheted flower or other applique could be added over that space. The next page shows the look of a flower added over that space (I used a crocheted flower with ties that simply ties on). I included a link to that free pattern on the next page:
