Abbreviations: ch = chain, chs = chains, dc = double crochet, ea = each, hdc = half double crochet, sc = single crochet, sp = space, st = stitch, sts = stitches
Materials: For a finished size of about 5 to 5 1/2 inches tall, use worsted weight yarn, with a US size G or H hook. For a small applique, use thread, such as size 10 thread with a US size 8 steel hook.
Starting Chain: Leaving a length to weave in later, chain 2.
Row 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Row 2: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, 2 sc in last sc.
Row 3: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, ch 1,
sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc.
Row 4: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc in ea of next 2 sc, ch 1, skip the ch-1 sp, sc in ea of next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc.
Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc in ea of first 4 sc, ch 2, skip ch-1 sp, sc in ea of last 4 sc.
Row 6: ch 1, turn, sc in ea of first 4 sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in ea of last 4 sc.
Row 7: ch 1, turn, sc in ea of first 5 sc, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in ea of last 5 sc.

Row 11: ch 2 (counts as first hdc), turn, 2 more hdc in first sc, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, skip next 2 dc, 2 dc in ea of next 2 sc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 sp, 2 dc in ea of next 2 sc, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, skip next 2 dc, 3 hdc in last sc.
Row 12: ch 1, turn, sc in ea st until you reach the ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in ea st to end of row.
Finishing: ch 1, sc in the end of ea row around the other two sides (with 2 sc around the post whenever the edge stitch is a dc).
End off, leaving a length to weave in. Weave in ends securely, weaving back and forth
several times on the back, working under back part of a number of stitches
so that the ends will not unravel over time.
