Filet crochet is a lovely technique that makes use of double crochet and chain stitches (and sometimes lacets or other stitches) to create open meshes and filled-in blocks. You can arrange these elements to create intricate pictorial designs featuring flowers, butterflies, and other motifs. Usually, the pictorial designs are charted, which gives you a helpful visual image of the design to work from.

This checkered diamond pattern is endlessly versatile. There are two versions; one is a repeating pattern that you can use for making a project of nearly any size, large or small. The other chart is for a square design adapted from the repeating pattern.
